The COVID-19 variant that is responsible for an alarming number of infections and deaths in India has now spread to 44 countries worldwide, according to theWorld Health Organization(WHO).
The B.1.617 variant has been identified in COVID-19 cases in 44 other countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, China and Singapore, according to WHO’s report.

Thenew COVID-19 variant omicronaccounted for a majority of reported cases in the United States last week.
This represents a significant increase in the spread of omicron across the country. The week prior, omicron accounted for just 12 percent of cases in the U.S., the CDC reported.
Omicron makes up an even larger portion of COVID-19 cases in parts of the country including the New York region and the Pacific Northwest, where omicron accounted for more than 90 percent of cases last week.

New research out of Louisiana suggests thatCOVID-19could infect tissues inside the male genital tract.
Researchers at Tulane National Primate Research Center recently tested three male rhesus macaques (also known as rhesus monkeys) to see where the coronavirus was located within their bodies,according to a non-peer-reviewed study.
Thomas Hope, a senior author of the paper and a professor of cell and developmental biology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, said researchers “had no idea we would find [COVID-19] there,” according toThe New York Times.

New York is experiencing a massive surge in COVID-19 cases and COVID-related hospitalizations among children.
On Friday, the New York State Department of Health revealed hospital admissions for children under 17 years old hasquadrupledsince Dec. 5
Last week, the Department recorded that no children between ages 5 and 11 who were hospitalized were fully vaccinated. During the same week, only one fourth of hospitalized children between ages 12 and 17 were fully vaccinated.
