California prosecutors now believea gay college student was stabbed to deathwhile he was home on winter break this year because of his sexual orientation, PEOPLE confirms.
On Thursday the Orange County district attorney announced that a hate-crime sentencing enhancement had been added to the murder charge against21-year-old Samuel Woodward, a high school classmate ofBlaze Bernstein, 19.
Woodward is accused of fatally stabbing Bernstein more than 20 times in early January. The teen’s bodywas found in a local park days later, in a shallow grave.

A 21-year-old college student who friends said was selfless to the end died on spring break while trying to rescue a child from rough waters in Florida.
Layne Gravois, a junior electrical engineering student at Louisiana State University, died during a water rescue on Thursday in Miramar Beach, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office said in arelease.

A Minnesota college student’scoronavirus diagnosisis being considered a “blessing in disguise” after doctors also discovered that she was unknowingly battling another disease.
Makenna Studer, a student at Mankato State, tested positive for COVID-19 in September. While her other classmates who contracted the virus got better over time, Studer’s health continued to decline.
“I kept getting worse and worse and I had pretty much every symptom you could have," she told locals news stationWCCO.

California authorities are looking for a suspect in the hit-and-run death of a college student struck while walking on the street hours before she was scheduled to return to school from winter break.
Police said Pinedo was walking on a crosswalk when the vehicle struck her.
“Her life was tragically taken in a way that Angelina did not deserve,” her sister Martha Torres told the station.
