In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, his town is unrecognizable. “It is a war zone,” he tells PEOPLE. “It’s just a war zone.” The 74-year-old and his wife live on 10-mile canal in South Fort Myers. The couple evacuated to Fort Lauderdale just hours before the Category 4 storm hit Wednesday, but they went back for a few hours Thursday to survey the damage and reconnect with their son Michael, who’d stayed behind with his family.
