Christina Aguilerais opening up about surviving her abusive childhood.
In a new interview on theCall Her Daddypodcast, the Grammy winner spoke about growing up in a “chaotic” household, witnessing her mother Shelly Kearns be abused at the hands of her father Fausto Aguilera and how it led her to adopt a “protector” mindset.
“I grew up in a chaotic upbringing as a very young child, always feeling like a protector and all that, and always felt isolated in my situation,” said Aguilera, 42, noting that singing became a “release” and “form of expression” for her as a kid.

In the video, the Grammy winner lip-synced to audio of herself asking her costar which dance routine she wanted to see.

“What I was doing last year withLiberationwas kind of a shedding of a certain skin on some level,” Aguilera, 38, tells PEOPLE exclusively in its latest issue. “Prior to that, I had given myself fully to television and being a part of a network that really wasn’t quite the fit for me after the amount of time I put in.”
After six seasons on the show, the star says she was “ready to move on” and focus on her creative side again.

Christina Aguilerawas back on stage Tuesday night, for her first tour stop in a decade.
The singer, 37, took the stage at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida for the first stop of her Liberation Tour.
“What an amazing warm welcome back to the stage after 10 years (too many!),” Aguilera wrote on Instagram afterwards, captioning a gallery of photos from the tour. “[It] felt like coming HOME again!!”
