“Brilliant day at #BuckinghamPalace getting Damed!” Twiggy, 69, captioned a photo of the big moment on Twitter. “Thanks for all my lovely messages.”
She also posed proudly with her new insignia.
“I’ve met him before,” she said. “He’s really nice, and he said, ‘Congratulations, about time you got this. We’re all thrilled for you.”

And her new title has a nice ring to it.
“Officially it’s Dame Lesley, but call me Dame Twiggy,” she said. “I think Dame Twiggy sounds best.”

Discovered at 16, the London native graced the cover of nearly every major fashion magazine while still a teen and came to epitomize the androgynous mod look of the 1960s.
“What happened to me happened in that mid-’60s revolution, which was all about youth – you had the Beatles, you had me, you had the (Rolling) Stones,” shepreviously told PEOPLE. “We were all working-class rebels, I suppose.”
