Muncie plane crash

A pilot and two people on the ground were seriously injured after a plane crashed in Indiana on Monday morning, authorities said.

The accident occurred when a single-engine Piper aircraft en route from Bloomington crashed on approach to Delaware County Regional Airport in Muncie shortly before 10:30 a.m. local time, Tim Baty, the airport’s manager, said.

Two people out on a walk on the Cardinal Greenway, a path adjacent to the airport, were injured as was the pilot, who was the only person on the plane, officials said.

The pilot, who was trapped inside the plane until first responders were able to free him, was later taken to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment, per WISH.

A representative with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request regarding the victims’ conditions on Tuesday.

There was no warning that the plane was experiencing an emergency, Baty said.

Construction workers at the airport were able to extinguish the fire which broke out when the plane made impact, Baty said.

The Federal Aviation Administration as well as the sheriff’s office are now investigating the accident.
